$ENB secured federal approval for its British Columbia natural gas pipeline expansion project, clearing a major regulatory hurdle for the Canadian energy infrastructure giant.
The approval removes a key obstacle for Enbridge's pipeline capacity expansion in western Canada, positioning the company to capture growing natural gas demand from Asia-Pacific markets. The project will increase throughput capacity for natural gas flowing from British Columbia's Montney and Duvernay formations to export terminals on the west coast.
Federal approval represents the final major regulatory milestone for the expansion, following provincial environmental assessments completed in late 2025. The project is expected to begin construction in the second half of 2026, with initial capacity additions coming online by early 2028.
Natural gas prices have remained elevated this year amid strong Asian LNG demand and constrained pipeline capacity from western Canada. The approval comes as E-Mini S&P 500 futures are +0.42% ahead of the open, signaling a firmer start after Thursday's session saw the S&P 500 close -0.41% at $7,108.40.
$ENB shares closed Thursday at $59.32, up 0.8% on moderate volume. The stock has gained 12% year-to-date as investors price in growing North American natural gas export capacity.
The expansion aligns with Canada's strategy to become a major LNG supplier to Asian markets, with multiple export terminals planned for the British Columbia coast. Enbridge operates North America's longest crude oil and liquids pipeline system and distributes natural gas to approximately 3.8 million customers across Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and New York State.
The project will create approximately 2,000 construction jobs and generate significant tax revenue for British Columbia and federal governments.
