What is a Qualified Person (QP) in mining disclosure?
A Qualified Person is an engineer or geoscientist who, under NI 43-101, must sign off on the scientific and technical information a company discloses. To qualify, the individual needs a relevant university degree, at least five years of relevant experience, and membership in a recognised professional association with disciplinary powers.
The QP requirement is the backbone of the standard: it places personal, professional accountability behind resource estimates, drill results, and economic studies. A QP must verify the underlying data — including reviewing assay quality control — and is named in technical reports and material disclosures.
For investors, the QP is a credibility check. Independent QPs (not company employees) carry more weight on resource estimates and feasibility studies. Australia's JORC Code uses an equivalent concept, the "Competent Person." When a result is announced without a named QP or Competent Person taking responsibility, treat it with caution.
